Chicago 18th (A) Notes & Bibliography Quick Guide
Every time that you quote, paraphrase, summarise or use anyideas that are not your own, you need
to reference it. This is important to avoid plagiarism.
There are two places that you need to write references:
Where you refer to the material in the body of your assessment (note citation).
A list at the end of your assessment where you provide all the details for each note citation
(bibliography).
Note Citations
● Insert footnotes in Word under the ‘References’ tab, add them after punctuation. They will
automatically number consecutively and update.
● A note citation has two parts: The ‘superscript’ number in your text, (for example1) and the
corresponding number at the bottom of your page, with the full reference details.● Include the relevant page number(s) after the year in your notes.
Multiple citations and multiple authors
● If you cite the same resource multiple times, use the subsequent ‘shortened notes’ rules.● If the resource has more than two authors, list only the first author followed by ‘et al.’ in the
note. List up to six authors in the bibliography; if there are more than six, list only the first
three, followed by “et al.”
Bibliography
● Place the bibliography at the end of your document, on a new page with a centred heading. ● Write a bibliography entry for each resource you cited in a note.
● Begin each entry on a new line, and use ‘hanging indent’ formatting.
